Forget Brunch

If your mom is more into writers and bars than flowers and omelettes, then we have the perfect Mother's Day idea for you. (Of course, if you have an early-rising, brunchy mom, you can still use this idea for your own cocktails-and-culture decompression purposes later in the day.) The New Short Fiction Series celebrates 10 years of second Sundays this weekend with a big anniversary shindig -- the 10th annual Emerging Voices Group Show -- featuring fresh work by a dynamic and eclectic group of a half-dozen writers on the verge of greatness, in the good-times-friendly setting of a bar. The writings of Sue Coppa, Josh DuBose, Scott Fabbro, Darri Farr, James Gabriel and Mel Toltz will not, however, be read by the authors themselves. In the twist that makes this series so unique, the words are performed as theatrical spoken word by a rotating cast of actors, this month including Sally Shore, Taylor Calmus, Robot Chicken's Jim Hanks, Glee's Jesse Holcomb, Joshua Lamont and Shaun Shimoda. Part literature, part theatrical vignette and part happy hour, this take on the written word is not your mother's reading series -- or maybe it is. The Federal Bar, 5303 Lankershim Blvd., N. Hlywd.; Sun., May 12, 7 p.m. $10 in advance, $15 at the door. (866) 468-3399, newshortfictionseries.com.
