Film's Fanciest Footwork
Following in the footsteps of The Sound of Music and Grease sing-alongs, "Dirty Dancing Dance-Along" celebrates the film's 25th anniversary and launches this year's Dance Camera West Dance Media Film Festival. Next weekend, the festival moves west to the L.A. County Museum of Art (June 28-29) for a program of short and long dance films, panel discussions and a tribute to Soul Train, including a documentary, interviews and a Soul Train–style dance party. The Hammer Museum hosts the final event (June 30), a documentary on choreographer Wayne McGregor and an awards reception. For the "Dirty Dancing Dance-Along," pedal pushers, floaty dresses and leather jackets are encouraged, and prizes will go to those best capturing the film's 1960s Catskills-resort look. Come at 7:45 p.m. for a preshow salsa lesson. Members of Latin dance ensemble Contra Tiempo and other local dancers will display dances from key film sequences, but no one will ever match Patrick Swayze's charismatic moves or his iconic line from the movie: "Nobody puts Baby in a corner!" Don't get put in a corner and miss out on all the free festival events. Grand Performances, 300-350 S. Grand Ave., dwntwn.; Fri., June 22, 8 p.m.; free.
