Doing the Lobster Roll

San Pedro's Ports O'Call Village will be crawling with crustaceans this weekend for the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival. More than 30,000 fresh Maine lobsters will be flown in daily from that other ocean and cooked up in various forms. A limited number of giant Monster Lobsters will be offered as festival fare, a delectable treat if you can get over being totally creeped out by the enormous, alien-looking marine animal staring at you in the face. If you decide to tackle a Monster Lobster (ordering ahead online is recommended), you'll be awarded a hat and shirt and be inducted into the Monster Lobster Hall of Fame. Then you'll have to walk the plank: The captain and crew of the Red Swan, a pirate show that promises to take your buttered-lobster breath away with stilt walking and glass eating aboard their beached ship, undoubtedly will be up to no good with their fun and fiesty ways. The live soundtrack for this enormous boil and broil fest will be headlined by Big Black Delta on Friday, Dead Sara on Saturday and The English Beat on Sunday, so you can definitely "Come for the feast, stay for the fun," as the event tagline suggests. The lobster festival and San Pedro Fish Markets are teaming up to set three Guinness World Records: most lobsters served in eight hours, most lobsters cooked in a single cooker, and largest serving of lobster. We owe it to the organizers to fill our bellies and eat our way into lobster history.
