Dispatches From the So Wrong It's Right Dept.

A pair of New York-based but increasingly L.A.-present enfants terribles come together to melt your brain, as Neck Face and Fuck This Life: 2 of Amerika's Most Wanted opens with a reception at New Image Art, the original gangster gallery that has helped define the vanguard of California street art for two decades. Neck Face's career in uncommissioned public art has run the gamut from a carpeting of name-tag throw ups and scrawled tags that played out like a nationwide urban scavenger hunt, to elaborate performance-based conceptions from New York to Miami and L.A., and one of the most memorable installations at MOCA's street-art juggernaut (the nasty crack alley walk-in diorama at the back). Most recently, he's been channeling his twisted sense of humor, frenetic drawing style and eye-popping palette into more traditional formats like painting and drawing, but without losing any of the groan-inducing transgression he's foisted on his fellow citizens out in the streets. At New Image Art, he shares the gallery with another NYC-based provocateur, collagist and zine magnate Fuck This Life, whose own prolific responses to the outre output of popular print culture are inspired by and literally crafted out of the scattershot of desperation and sexually explicit advertising that fills our newspapers and carpets or sidewalks. We predict they're really going to enjoy their stay in West Hollywood. New Image Art, 7908 Santa Monica Blvd., W. Hlywd.; reception Sun., Sept. 18, 7-10 p.m.; exhibit runs Tues.-Sat. thru Oct. 14; free. (323) 654-2192, newimageart.gallery.com.
