CUT TO THE LACE
Why is there never any lace at LACE? Maybe they just don't have the money for it. No Queen Anne's lace, no lace curtains -- not even Paper Lace and their smash hit "The Night Chicago Died." Some combination of these, however, may be available at the LACE Benefit Art Auction , which aims to redress this glaring lack of infrastructure in the arts organization that has, for the past 32 years, embraced the fringes of the graceful, the grotesque and the profane. Tonight's entertainment -- a concept used rather loosely at a silent auction -- includes a collaborative performance by Dorian Wood and Killsonic with Ryan Heffington and Fingered Dancers, with costumes by Franc Fernandez. Franc Fernandez! The sale includes work by veterans Jeffrey Vallance and videographer Michelle O'Marah, and up-and-comers painter and video artist Cyril Kuhn, pop artist Gary Garay, and shipping container recontextualist Heather Rasmussen. It all serves to remind us of the fact that there's one art that can't be neglected for long: the art of the deal.
