Carry On My Wayard Son
It takes arena-size balls to be in a cover band that plays music most people thought was really uncool the first time around. Atlanta's Yacht Rock Revue – all seven of them – pay unironic tribute to not one but a whole "Time Life Infomercial Catalogue" of soft rock artists whose feathered hair, full beards and leisure suits were the reasons punk rock in America was invented. But don't blame YRR. The genre crept back into pop culture's consciousness thanks to L.A.'s J.D. Ryznar and his hilarious 2005 YouTube mockumentary, Yacht Rock, which satirized "California vagina sailors" and their ilk – AM gods like Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, Toto and Michael McDonald-era Doobie Brothers. (Can you imagine if the beef between Hall & Oates and Loggins and Messina had really existed? Bedlum). The comedy troupe also goes by the stage aliases Please PleaseRock Me (The Beatles), Uno Dos Tres Catorce (U2) and Nigels with Attitude (XTC). And for street cred, the band claims to have jammed on stage with Billy Joel, Sheryl Crowe, Don Henley, Joan Jett and members of Weezer. Think they'll help you get laid tonight. What a fool believes.
