Brother, Can You Spare a Book Deal?

Could you go through your life without using money? In the modern world, there remains the incessant urge to keep accumulating money until you get a fuller package than what your parents had — and by "package" I mean a booby-trapped FedEx box full of urine. Author Mark Sundeen discusses The Man Who Quit Money (Riverhead), a book about 50-year-old Daniel James "Suelo" Shellabarger, a proponent of "simple living" who turned his back on the mastery of money and stopped using it in autumn of 2000. He occasionally lives in a cave near Moab in Utah. He works. He's not a spastic nerfbag. He just opts out of the whole money experience. Sundeen is exceptionally ballsy to bring this tale of dematerialized materialism to deepest, darkest, gilded Manhattan Beach, and Suelo also has refused his proceeds from the sale of the book — so more for Mark! There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's reality. Pages, 904 Manhattan Ave., Manhattan Beach; Thurs., March 22, 7 p.m.; free, book is $15. (310) 318-0900,
