If it wasn't already clear, Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse) is a rather brilliant musician. In the past decade, he has famously mashed together Jay-Z and The Beatles, restarted CeeLo Green's career with Gnarls Barkley, and worked with such disparate forces as MF Doom, Gorillaz, The Black Keys and Beck. In Broken Bells, Burton collaborates with The Shins' James Mercer, and while their second album, After the Disco, isn't as consistently intriguing as its self-titled predecessor, there are still some wonderful alt-rock interludes. The pair belies the album's title track with Mercer's poppy vocals and Burton's new-wave settings, and the guitars soar exhilaratingly into the fadeout ether on "Perfect World." Brooklyn electronic-pop trio Au Revoir Simone provide a distinctly enchanting contrast with their shimmering, poetic soundscapes.
