Bill German

The phrase "PowerPoint presentation" isn't often used in relation to the Rolling Stones, but band biographer Bill German promises to utilize all of the wonders of modern technology at tonight's program, where he'll tell stories about his former employers and display rare photos that he says capture the English group "in some Spinal Tap–like moments." Acres and acres of forests have been chopped down to print dozens of books about the Stones' glory days in the '60s and '70s with ex-guitarists Brian Jones and Mick Taylor, but few writers have covered the band's bittersweet and under-documented '80s era with Ron Wood, and none with the wit and insight German served up in his 2009 memoir, Under Their Thumb: How a Nice Boy From Brooklyn Got Mixed Up With the Rolling Stones (and Lived to Tell About It). Not only does German fill in the blanks with crucial info that was left out of former bassist Bill Wyman's two autobiographies and Keith Richards' recent bestseller, he spins an often-compelling tale about how he evolved from a starry-eyed high school fan who edited the Stones' newsletter into a somewhat wiser and more jaded survivor of the group's messy backstage politics and infighting. To celebrate England's Newest Hitmakers' 50th anniversary in show biz, the 1969 tour documentary Gimme Shelter will be screened following German's discussion. The Last Bookstore, 453 S.
