BEWARE OF GLITTER
Paintings titled Heads Full of Messy Zombies and The Witch of Silent Spring mark yet another moment of pop surrealist serenity in which the artist takes you on a trip -- not like the one Art Linkletter's daughter took but a nice one. Imagine a thistle and a porcupine getting off their incredible power trips and getting married, honeymooning on acrylic, mica, silver leaf and the bachelor's mortal enemy: glitter. To wit: tonight's reception for Camille Rose Garcia's The Hydra of Babylon exhibition boasts the hostess with the mostest and/or cirrhosis, Distillers singer Brody Dalle amid Garcia's saintly deer avatars, ladies-in-waiting lying in wait, and the distinct feeling of humidity dripping from the canvas. Islamic geometry, Greek mythology and ecological catastrophe are some of the themes -- a cosmology rendered even more transcendent by hope, that uniquely powerful hex the artist wields like a shield on the battlefield.r
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 12. Continues through Oct. 10, 2009
