Best Congo Line
The ever-adventurous REDCAT launches its international dance series with the L.A. premiere of Congolese choreographer Faustin Linyekula's highly praised more more more ... future. An onstage band led by the astonishing guitarist Flamme Kapaya ferociously aids and abets Studios Kabako's three male dancers (including Linyekula) as they scavenge hope amid ongoing war and the detritus of past generations. Linyekula's specific focus was the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but his righteous outrage applies to more universal targets. The dancing ranges from traditional movement, with the dancers garbed like ruffled balls, to sensuous, undulating contemporary stylings showcasing the dancers' extraordinary muscle command, to bling-obsession that could make Vegas blush. See why The New York Times put Linyekula on its "must see" short list and a recent review called more more more ... future "as epic as a rock opera." REDCAT, 631 W. Second St., dwntwn.; thru Oct. 8, 8:30 p.m.; $20-$25, $16-$20 students. (213) 237-2800, redcat.org.
Oct. 5-8, 8:30 p.m., 2011
