Balkan Bash

There's no way to pigeonhole Goran Bregovic. For the past several decades, the Sarajevo-born "musical cross-pollinator" has brought his compositional, instrumental and conducting talents to film, opera, recording and wild live performances in which traditional music from his native land burns rubber with everything from choral sacred works to rock, reggae, tango and other less reverent art forms. His popular show, Goran Bregovic and His Wedding and Funeral Orchestra, has been called a "Balkan free-for-all" that celebrates the Gypsy in all of us. "Deep down, most of us would like to be a Gypsy," Bregovic once reflected. "It's a metaphor for the part of the soul that wants to defy gravity." Bregovic and his amazing ensemble -- which includes a Serbian gypsy brass band, classical string ensemble, Russian Orthodox male choir, Bulgarian female vocalists and an electric guitar -- heat up Disney Hall this week in a program that runs the gamut from spiritual meditative numbers to "naughty pop tunes." The result is a peppery goulash that would rate at the top of a musical Scoville Scale. At Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 S. Grand Ave., dwntwn.; Thurs., Oct. 26, 8pm; $47-$106.
