Awake and Sing

When it comes to putting on a show, nobody beats the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. The group's programming runs the gamut of vocal music -- classical, folk, world music, contemporary, opera, spirituals, electronica -- if it can be sung, they'll sing it. Now add the adventurous voices of all-female chorus Vox Femina and the new youth chorus Outside Voices and, well, who knows what could happen? We'll find out this weekend at Awakenings, when the three vocal groups join forces for a concert celebrating both spring and the premiere performance of the GMCLA-sponsored Outside Voices, a mixed chorus for youths 16-24 who are "lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or straight allies." It's all in the chorus' happy tradition of inaugurating and supporting new voices dedicated to cultural, ethnic and sexual diversity. Sixteen years ago, Vox Femina -- whose goal is "to create a world that affirms the worth and dignity of every person" -- had its premiere performance at a GMCLA concert, and the mission to promote excellence and equality in the arts continues.
