Art of the Past and the Future

Multimedia artist Barry Anderson calls the mean streets of Kansas City home these days, but his L.A. roots run pretty deep, and that includes an ongoing collaboration with local experimental "psych-pop-noir" band VUM. It's easy to see how Anderson, with his interest in digital animation, the optics of fractal geometry, and the nature of collaborative myth-making, would end up creating the video for a track off an album called Psychotropic Jukebox. In fact, VUM performs a special after-hours (aka 8:30 p.m.) set at the opening reception for Anderson's new exhibition, The Janus Restraint: Shift/Split - an assembly of sculpture, video-based objects, animations, projections, photographs and sound. Grounded in a cross-platform social media archive of collaboration and experimentation, Janus Restraint takes full advantage of digital technology to wield lush, beautiful and unsettling images, alternating intimate surrealism and poetic grandeur in compelling work that is more than the sum of its parts. Opening at the same time on the same night, just steps away at Honor Fraser, don't miss new paintings by Meleko Mokgosi, whose epic painting cycle - a previous chapter of which won the day at the 2012 Hammer Biennial - depicts post-colonial Africa in a panoramic history painting both profound and dynamic.
