33rd Annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards

So for this party, the attire is ancient Greek, you know, 450 B.C. give or take a century. Any toga will do. If you don't like the way your arms look, you can stuff the toga under your jacket. It's the 33rd annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards — the paper's annual, irreverent theater party that passes itself off as an awards show. Since 1979, the newspaper has been honoring the the best theater in venues of 99-seats or less — which is about 90 percent of the theater done in L.A. This year, the bash is hosted by sketch comedy troupe Lost Moon Radio, which has earned its street cred by doing faux radio shows with a live band backup. Their hallmark is wry, smart satire. How wry they can be at the cavernous Avalon on Vine is anybody's guess, but we can't wait until April 2 to find out. Doors open at 6:30, show starts an hour later. They're staging the party as the First-Ever Theater Awards on the outskirts of Athens, when theater was taken really seriously, honoring the god of fertility and wine, Dionysus. Theater isn't taken quite so seriously in 21st century SoCal, but we can pretend, which is what we do best in these parts. And if we can't pretend, we can eat and drink at the complimentary buffet after the show. Anybody who's anybody in local theater will be there. Come party with us. Avalon, 1735 Vine St., Hlywd.; Mon., April 2, doors open 6:30 p.m.; show starts 7:30 p.m. $25, laweekly.com/theaterawards
