Best Persian Ice Cream Los Angeles 2013

Mashti Malone

Mashti Malone in Hollywood is scooping the kind of Persian-style ice cream best described as fragrant, flavored by spices and floral ingredients accenting some of the more notable perfumes and colognes. Rosewater, in particular, is a recurring profile that's paired with sour cherry, ginger or saffron. There's also saffron with pistachio and orange blossom — both milder in taste than you might expect. Two complementary bottles of syrup, one sour cherry and the other lemon, sit near the entrance to the ice cream shop. And you'll find yourself hovering near them until you're sure you've poured enough of the citrus flavoring on your scoops of faluden, a stunning concoction of rosewater with rice. 1525 N. La Brea Ave., Hlywd. (323) 874-6168, mashtimalone.com. —Christine Chiao

  • Daw Yee: Mission of Burma
L.A. has a very small pool of Burmese restaurants; among them, Daw Yee does not boast the most extensive menu. Nonetheless, Daw Yee, in Monterey Park, is fascinating for one big reason — namely, that it gives L.A. something unusual: a Burmese restaurant that caters to younger diners.
