Best Gay Bar Los Angeles 2013

The Abbey

When nightlife superpower SBE became involved with the Abbey, some wondered if it would get too swankified or "straightened" out. But with its heightened profile, the WeHo restaurant, nightclub and bar remains an advocate for gay causes, all while offering giddy times and great food. Menu items like the "Chik-for-Gay" sandwich — a tasty alternative to Chik-fil-A, with proceeds going to gay-rights organizations — make it an enduring favorite that's usually packed with people of all sexual preferences. Though it's a café by day, it becomes a hedonistic dance hub at night, with an array of clubs featuring shirtless go-go boys dancing to hip-hop and pop. As for the straights? Well, bachelorette parties were banned until all could marry, and since the dream has now come true, the policy has been overturned. (The Abbey also held free wedding receptions for gay couples that married after the repeal of Proposition 8 and DOMA.) At the Abbey, fighting for your right to party is what it's all about. 692 N. Robertson Blvd., W. Hlywd. (310) 289-8410, abbeyfoodandbar.com. —Lina Lecaro
