Best Cookies Los Angeles 2013

Diddy Riese

Los Angeles is home to a whole host of upscale bakeries producing small batches of delicious cookies, and each year more and more spots are offering "artisanal" varieties with ingredients like smoked salt. But the down-home cookies at Diddy Riese have been satisfying customers for 30 years, and the shop's loyal following swings out the doors in a long line all day and all night. The 10-flavor menu includes no-frills concoctions like good ol' chocolate chip, cinnamon-sugar, peanut butter and white chocolate macadamia. Cookies are baked fresh daily and they're quite the steal — you can buy three for $1, or build your own ice cream cookie sandwich with one of a dozen Dreyer's flavors for just $1.75. Setting these cookies apart is their soft but chewy texture, stupidly low price and iron consistency, due mostly to owner Mark Perry's dedication and constant presence at the one and only Westwood location. We're superglad he didn't franchise or open a cookie truck. 926 Broxton Ave., Wstwd. (310) 208-0448, diddyriese.com. —Tracy Chabala
