Readers' Choice: L.A. River Bike Path

Earlier this year, our city fathers saw fit to bring CicLAvia to the Westside. They shut down several lanes of Venice Boulevard and turned it over to bicycles. You could ride unimpeded all the way to the beach. Cyclists could be forgiven for scratching their heads, because on the Westside every day is CicLAvia, thanks to the Ballona Creek Bike Path. The path runs almost seven miles from National Boulevard in Culver City to the Pacific Ocean at Marina del Rey, where it links up with the beachfront path. It's completely separated from the street grid, so (unlike CicLAvia) there is no stopping to allow cars to cross. It goes past wetlands, ballparks and backyards. The path has been around for decades, which means people take it for granted. But with rising concern about hit-and-runs, it's the safest way to get to the beach on two wheels.
