Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center

Dance at the Music Center's 10th-anniversary season is its most ambitious yet, a tasting menu of styles that tantalizes with unique projects from high-caliber companies. There's the long-overdue return of National Ballet of Canada in the U.S. premiere of Christopher Wheeldon's full-length story ballet Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Oct. 19-21). Next up, the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago brings back its re-creation of Nijinsky-Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, as well as some infrequently seen repertory from William Forsythe, Wheeldon and others (Feb. 1-3). In an unusual combined performance, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and San Francisco's LINES Ballet debut a new piece by LINES director Alonzo King (June 21-23). On top of all that, there's Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (April 17-21), 7 Fingers' beloved acrobatic show Traces (April 26-28) and American Ballet Theatre (July 11-14) in a night of repertory, followed by that swashbuckler Le Corsaire. But you already missed the September premiere of Benjamin Millepied's Music Center–supported L.A. Dance Project. Maybe he'll be back next season. 135 N. Grand Ave., dwntwn. (213) 972-0711, musiccenter.org/about/Our-Programs/Glorya-Kaufman-Dance/.

  • Daw Yee: Mission of Burma
L.A. has a very small pool of Burmese restaurants; among them, Daw Yee does not boast the most extensive menu. Nonetheless, Daw Yee, in Monterey Park, is fascinating for one big reason — namely, that it gives L.A. something unusual: a Burmese restaurant that caters to younger diners.
  • Street League Skateboarding Super Crown World Championship
On Sunday, Street League Skateboarding touched down in the Galen Center at USC as part of a four-stop tour for SLS's Super Crown World Championship. The L.A. stop determined the roster for Super Crown, airing August 24th on FOX Sports 1. The final eight are Nyjah Huston, Luan Oliveira, Torey Pudwill, Shane O'Neill, Paul Rodriguez, Chaz Ortiz, Matt Berger and Ishod Wair. All photos by Nanette Gonzales.
  • Lina in L.A. -- The Dog & Pony Show
Comedian, burlesque diva and L.A.'s most fabulous little person, Selene Luna, hosts a wild variety show (no pups or ponies, just great performers) Mondays at Akbar. Recently, the fun featured strip tease from Audrey DeLuxe, standup from Michael Patrick Duggan, Paul Jacek and Mary Kennedy and the smokin' musical stylings of Crissy Guerrero and Kristian Hoffman.
