The throngs of people, tree-lined streets and old buildings might make you think you've arrived on the set of The Andy Griffith Show. The four-block-long Monrovia Family Festival, held 5-9 p.m. every Friday on Myrtle Avenue in Old Town Monrovia, is quintessential Main Street USA. To the south there's the Certified Farmers Market; to the north, a kiddie area complete with ponies, petting zoo and bouncers; and in the middle, two blocks' worth of vendors hawking every kind of kitsch. All this is bookended by live music (luckily not always of the ubiquitous pan-pipe trio variety) and interspersed throughout with food stalls — Jake's Roadhouse, Rudy's Taco Bar and Merengue Bakery being local faves. Just in case your inner foodie needs some nurturing after all those healthy samples, Myrtle is lined with more than a few upscale restaurants.
