Map & Details>>

Next time you're near Dodger Stadium, pay attention to the 110 north on-ramp in Elysian Park. A spot of green in the smog marks the Solano Canyon Community Garden, a five-acre hillside garden that runs along the highway and expands to cover the second tunnel over the freeway's northbound lanes. Pull over, and you'll find an oasis of carefully tended vegetables thriving in the least likely of places. A nonprofit called Farmworks L.A. operates here, employing at-risk youth to plant and cultivate organic food for Los Angeles restaurants. The space also harbors individual plots for local gardeners and a farmer's orchard. Now you don't have to take the chef's word for it when he tells you your kale was locally grown: As long as you're eating at Larchmont Grill, Homegirl Café or Square One, you can stop by Solano to check in on your favorite leafy greens at home. 545 Solano Ave., Elysian Park; solanogarden.org.
