On the east end of Echo Park is a pink and parrot green cottage that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. This is the home of The Classroom L.A., a neighborhood space for Angelenos to learn to sew or make their own alterations. Inside the Classroom L.A. sparkling chandeliers and rustic paintings hang high, and roughly a dozen sewing machines sit stacked as if awaiting the Seven Dwarfs. Instructors with fashion degrees lead classes on sewing basics and restyling favorite articles of clothing. Other crafting courses include jewelry making, terrarium building and playing with papier-mache. The tiny space is the love child of Echo Park's king of vintage, Justin Warwick, and local behavioral therapist Kelsey Wintringham. If the Sunset Boulevard cottage is over occupancy, students head a few skips down the road to the Classroom L.A.'s sister location, The Warehouse. The giant vintage clothing store welcomes the crafty classmates to get inspired by the retro ware that surrounds them; it's a fashionable happily ever after. 1269 W. Sunset Blvd., Echo Park; (213) 375-4066, theclassroomla.com.
