A position of rarefied, near-heroic honor should be reserved for Angelenos committed to nonautomotive modes of transportation. To Daniel Gellis, owner of Rolling Cowboys in Arlington Heights, bicycle ownership and ridership are not just a matter of positive citizenship and environmental benefit, they're also about maintaining vigorous health, appreciating elegant, cutting-edge machinery, enjoying a like-minded social scene and just plain saving money. A fluorescent-fonted banner on the store's facade shows gas pump prices and then the "gas price" of riding a bicycle: "$00.00." Nearby, colorful novelty bikes hang down like sculptures in the front window display. Brought up just blocks away, and with a hard-core competitive cycling past, the notably youthful Gellis shows up seven days a week, chats with anyone who comes in, sells a few used bikes, arranges fun morning group rides around L.A. and allows his shop to be an unofficial hangout center for local bike enthusiast youths. 3505 W. Pico Blvd., Mid-City; (323) 570-0066, rollingcowboys.com.
