Walt Disney donated a herd of bison to the William S. Hart Ranch and Museum in 1962. Their descendants mostly congregate on a smelly knoll swatting flies with their tails, with just a metal fence separating visitors from these once wild, now completely languid beasts. The museum is the actual ranch, built in 1926, where the famous cowboy movie star once lived. High on his hilltop, Hart sipped from porcelain cups in the tea room built next to the mansion. He fed his animals in the barnyard that’s now a petting zoo. Imagine the panoramic view surrounding Hart’s estate before industry dotted the horizon with warehouses and fast-food restaurants. Although some renovations are under way, part of the museum’s charm is its chipped paint and neglected cobwebs. On the way up, stop by the preserved 1880s Saugus Train Station. 24151 Newhall Ave., Newhall. (661) 254-4584. —Daiana Feuer
