The Windsor Apartments, anchoring the corner of Seventh and Catalina streets with its stately Tudor style, opened in 1927. Owner Samuel Rabinowich operated the hotel/residence within spitting distance of the grand Ambassador Hotel, at a time when the neighborhoods surrounding Wilshire Boulevard were among L.A.’s classiest addresses. An outdoor garden restaurant called the Windsor Inn opened at the same time, but it wasn’t until entrepreneur Ben Dimsdale launched the Windsor Restaurant on the ground floor of the building in 1949 that the location became a premier dining establishment. The pleated red-leather booths, English beefeater iconographyand classic, dimly lit steakhouse vibe is so old-school classic that the Windsor scored the “role” of the then-shuttered Brown Derby in Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, in a key Nicholson/Dunaway scene. Sadly, the original Windsor fell victim to changing times in 1991; however, the neighborhood now known as Koreatown can always do with more fabulous places to hang out and eat, and the location is now home to The Prince Café, where the new owners offer the virtually untouched Windsor decor along with tasty authentic food (the Korean-style fried chicken is to die for), plenty of soju and a laid-back lounge atmosphere. (As a testament to its staying power, it’s still a popular throwback filming location, most recently for Mad Men.) 3198 W. 7th St., Koreatown. (213) 389-2007. —Nicole Campos
