Remember those turn-of-the-millennium days, when wannabe DJs dropped $1,500 for a pair of Technics and a top-end mixer? They're so over. The recession version is buying used decks from craigslist, then taking your gear to Quality Electronics in West Hollywood. They'll clean, oil, tune and recalibrate each turntable for $29.99, making sure your wax is tracked with precision. While you're there, pick up some used vinyl, or go digital and buy the store's hottest-selling item — Serato Scratch DJ software. Yeah, even though Quality's been at it for 26 years, when there was nothing but vinyl DJs, it's just about the most knowledgeable place in town when it comes to the digital and analogue tools of the booth. Quality has remix software, production gear, and a deep stock of old-school headphones and cartridges. "I never disappoint the guy who needs a needle," says Israeli owner Yoni Hazzout. "I have them all." Prices are competitive. They know you go online. But you can't get that deep knowledge from a Web site. With strobes, speakers and fog machines for sale, there's a disco patina. 7761 Santa Monica Blvd., W. Hlywd. (323) 656-2475, qualityelectronics.net.

Two years ago i bought an Allen & Heath, new, for $600. Yoni said, "i must have misplaced the box and instruction manuel, stop back in a couple weeks and it will turn up." he sold me a flight case for another $65, at least this way i could get it home on the bus with no box. I'm pretty sure he sold me a used mixer at a new price, stopped back 3 weeks later, he never found the box, told me if i need the instruction manuel, print it off the computer. Brought the mixer to sell it back today, needing rent money, he said "i'll give you $80". what a joke, taking advantage of artist. If i was a crackhead and the mixer was stolen, 80 bucks would be a good price. my advice, buy new from Guitar Center or Sam Ash, buy used from craigslist or ebay. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS, do yourself a favor... jason kronick

good fluff piece you forgot that yoni my have alot of needles but try bringing in your old ones to look for a match yeah he will sell you new ones but try to keep your old ones. so to sum up youve just paid top price for needles that are the same prices at guitar center, sam ash,and musicans freind but then he tries to keep your old needles as part of the deal instead of giving you a deal on atrade in. that how he gets so many old cartridges ive had this happen to mein the store and they guy in line after me. i dont have anything against this store or this guy but that just isnt a cool move and some one needs to call him out on it.
