Beautiful people are breakfasting on biscuits with strawberry jam and blueberry brown sugar scones at Gjelina Take Away, the to-go counter next door to Gjelina in Venice. Although Gjelina Take Away is open late, breakfast service cuts off at 11 a.m. In the two years since it opened, the morning menu hasn't changed much: Aside from the excellent baked goods, it's the breakfast and open-faced sandwiches that are customer favorites, both ready to eat and utterly delicious. Try the original breakfast sandwich, resplendent with fried egg, braised kale, Gruyère cheese, bacon and homemade hot sauce on a homemade English muffin. Or the home-cured gravlax with herb cream cheese, house-pickled cucumbers, sliced hard-boiled egg and chives on homemade olive bread. Or the house-smoked trout with horseradish creme fraiche, green zebra tomatoes, pickled onions and Italian parsley on homemade sourdough. Take the food away, literally, or take it a short distance and sit on crates along Abbot Kinney — or retreat to the ivy-covered nook on the side, where two rooted benches, concrete slabs etched with the letters GTA and a wooden coffee table equal a makeshift outdoor lounge. 1427 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice.
