Music Box Steps

"That's the house up there, right on top of the stoop," Oliver Hardy points out to Stan Laurel as they attempt to move a giant piano up a daunting set of concrete steps leading to a house on Descanso Drive. During the now-infamous slapstick routine from Laurel & Hardy's Academy Award–winning 1932 short film, The Music Box, the raucous piano repeatedly goes crashing down the steep flight of stairs onto Vendome Street. You can still climb all 133 of the Music Box Steps, sans any pianos obstructing your path. The steps are commemorated with a plaque, an official street sign and the adjacent Laurel & Hardy Park, which will be filled with Laurel & Hardy impersonators, film screenings and piano-pushing re-enactments during the annual Music Box Steps Day, held this year on Oct. 12 from noon to 3 p.m. Stairway between Descanso Drive and Vendome Street at Del Monte Drive, Silver Lake. —Jennifer Swann
