Once upon a time, Frederic and Laila Laski lived in Paris, where they both worked for giant yogurt company Dannon and dreamt of opening not — Dieu merci — a frozen yogurt shop but a traditional French bakery. Fast-forward to February 2013, when the married couple opened exactly that, albeit not in Paris but in Beverly Hills. Lucky us. Early every morning, the Laskis line up pastries and baguettes behind the pretty glass cases at Chaumont Bakery and Café: gorgeous butter and chocolate croissants, éclairs and raspberry tarts, old-fashioned Paris-Brests and often a glorious apple tarte tatin, and lovely baguettes, often still warm from the ovens in the back. There are sandwiches and salads and eggs and coffee. Despite the patisserie's large menu and the happy formality of glass and marble, the dusted berries and immaculate pastry crusts, maybe the best thing is a simple breakfast of a warm baguette, sliced and spread with a bit of butter and jam. 143 S.
