Best Giant Rib in Koreatown (2013)

Star King BBQ

Don't worry about all those people ordering tomahawks at Star King BBQ. They're not going to hurt you — they just want to tuck into the biggest, most unusual cut of beef in Koreatown.  The tomahawk is the center of the rib-eye, very thick and on the bone, like an oversized chop. And Star King is the only place that has it. Furthermore, it's a Piedmontese beef tomahawk, and Star King is the only Koreatown restaurant that serves Piedmontese beef, which makes it doubly rare. Descended from Italian stock,  Piedmontese beef is lower in fat and calories and higher in protein than prime; also, the cattle are raised on a vegetarian diet and are hormone- and antibiotic-free.  The only downside to grilling a tomahawk is the logistics. You won't be able to get the whole thing on the grill, and it's too thick to cook through anyway — unless you plan to spend the night at Star King. The folks at the restaurant have to brown it first, then slice off the meat and grill it alongside the bone, which you then can gnaw on or take home to make points with your furry best friend. 3807 Wilshire Blvd., #120, Koreatown.
