Picking your favorite L.A. farmers market is a deeply personal thing, contingent upon on the vicissitudes of neighborhood and traffic, farmers and weather — and maybe your relationship to particular varieties of produce. But even if you don't live anywhere near the Third Street Promenade, it's worth the drive on Wednesday mornings just to experience the Santa Monica Certified Farmers Market, a city institution for more than three decades. Sure, we've been singing its praises for years, but even though we love other markets (almost) as much, there's something about the low heaven of the marine layer and the kitchen brigades of wandering chefs and the gathering crowds hunting for Meyer lemons and Forellenschluss lettuce that makes this seem more neighborly than most, like the city's best town square — one that just happens to double as a grocery store.
