Best Place to See Art in a Remnant of Old Hollywood (2013)

Museum of Latin American Art

On the edge of Long Beach's arts district is the only museum in the United States devoted to modern and contemporary art from Central and South America. The Museum of Latin American Art is housed in what remains of the Balboa Amusement Producing Co. studios (later a skating rink), built in 1913, when Hollywood was just a couple of barns. MoLAA exhibits paintings, prints, sculpture and photography from the museum's permanent collection and in temporary shows that draw on museum and private collections here and in Latin America. It's a different modernism: rooted, vivid, politically engaged, aware of U.S. and European avant-gardes but independent. It's a whole other continent of art. 628 Alamitos Ave., Long Beach, 90802.
