Best PBR Factory Turned Art Space (2013)

Brewery Artist Lofts

Straddling the 5 freeway, the L.A. River and a maze of industrial rail yards, the Brewery Artist Lofts boasts its own creative ecosystem, which thrives on 18 acres of brick lofts, cement towers and ivy-covered warehouses where artists live, work, eat, drink, sleep and party. With its own late-night bar and restaurant, communal gardens and sculpture parks, there's rarely a reason for residents to leave this circa 1903 Edison Power Plant and former Pabst Blue Ribbon brewery turned urban art camp for grown-ups. The live/work residences are available only to artists who create art in the space — and then only those who can afford its competitive rents. Nonresidents can explore the sprawling compound of lofted art studios, independent galleries and industrial warehouses — including the headquarters of Two Bit Circus, the tech startup that's reinventing the carnival game — at the biannual Brewery Art Walk, which occurs in April and October. 1920 N. Main St., Lincoln Heights, 90031. (323) 222-3007, thebreweryartistlofts.com. —Jennifer Swann
