Best Nomadic Art Experience (2013)

MobileMuralLab

Remember that grade-school exercise of learning to use prepositions in relation to a box? Substitute the MobileMuralLab and the same pedagogy applies, as this constantly-in-motion art studio creates an interactive art experience in the streets, through the streets, on the streets, with the streets. Artists Roberto Del Hoyo and David Russell founded the project in 2010, when they were students in the Public Practice MFA program at Otis College of Art and Design. Since beginning with experimental, smaller-scale interventions, the team has expanded its range of services to include rolling out the truck to events for pop-up–style mural workshops and designing K-12 curricula. The MML also collaborates with various community organizations to establish new permanent murals and restore existing significant public works; for instance, it's working with the Social and Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) on Judy Baca's half-mile-long Great Wall of Los Angeles in Valley Glen. You get the picture. Now go find the MuralMobileLab, and make a mural too. mobilemurallab.com. —Jessica Ritz
