Located inside a complex run by the Riverside County Medical Association, the Southern California Medical Museum is so tucked away that its neighbors probably don't even know it exists. Prepare to be simultaneously amused and panic-stricken by some of the gadgets early doctors used. There are barbaric-looking tools used on Civil War battlefields, including a portable amputation kit, with whiskey or chloroform for anesthesia and a rugged amputation saw. Check out shelves full of vintage medicine, packages of antique condoms, Electroshock machines, pill-making tools, wax molds of women's cervixes and even a phallus-shaped device from 1920 called a "prostate warmer." You will laugh, and you will thank your lucky stars that Western medicine has evolved. 3993 Jurupa Ave., Ste. 102, Riverside, 92506. (951) 787-7700, socalmedicalmuseum.org. —Nikki Kreuzer
