Given how hard dancers work, how short their careers are and how little most are paid, every dance is an act of devotion, and some dancing downright sacred. So although the 16-day World Festival of Sacred Music is principally concerned with musicians and the sounds they make, a number of dance events most appropriately have been included. Performances at three different venues punctuate this weekend’s festivities. Saturday at Loyola Marymount University, composer Paul Humphreys provides original music as choreographer Sri Susilowati and her company explore the spirituality in writings by Bertolt Brecht, Lao Tse, Padmasabhava and Gregory I. On Sunday, spiritual dance from the Indian subcontinent and the islands of Hawaii share the stage, as Shakti Dance Company and Halau Keali’i O Nalani join forces at the Torrance Performing Arts Center. Also Sunday, the Fountain Theatre’s regular flamenco series gives way to a shared concert with some of the Forever Flamenco stars partnering with Manipuri Dance Visions Ensemble, combining contemporary dance elements with dance from Spain and India.
