The Sexiest Rainy Day Scene Ever
This morning's storm seems to have passed, but you can live through one of the greatest rainy day scenes in all of cinema tonight at UCLA. As part of their ongoing tribute to Humphrey Bogart, the UCLA Film & Television Archive is screening The Big Sleep tonight at 7:30. Before the film thrusts (pun sorta intended) into plot convolutions leavened by the flirtatious back-and-forth between Bogart's detective Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall, Marlowe goes to a bookstore to spy on the shop across the street, and ends up making a few passes at a shopgirl in spite of her glasses (which he eventually asks her to remove). She comments that it's raining pretty hard outside; getting her drift, he says, "It just happens I have a pretty good bottle of rye in my pocket. I'd a lot rather get wet in here." Wink, wink!
The Big Sleep screens tonight at 7:30 at the Billy Wilder Theater at the Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Boulevard. More info at the UCLA Archive's website.
