Regency Theaters, the movie theater chain that was recently forced to leave the Fairfax Theatre when the building's landlord opted not to fix the theater's roof, announced this morning that they've taken over two historic Westwood theaters in danger of abandonment and subsequent demolition, the Village and the Bruin. Last year, Mann Theaters chose not to renew their leases, on the two 30s-era cinema palaces, continuing their slow exodus of a neighborhood that the chain used to dominate. The Mann leases end on Wednesday, and Regency will take over both Westwood theaters on April 1--the same day as the first hearing in the fight to have the Fairfax protected under landmark status.
