Our weekly list of special event movies to check out this week:

Friday, Sept. 28

How do you examine the nature of time on film? VICE and Grolsch Film Works asked three filmmakers -- Russia's Alexy Fedorchenko, the U.S.' Harmony Korine and Poland's Jan Kwiecinski -- to do just that in three 30-minute shorts, which have been combined into a full-length feature called The Fourth Dimension, screening tonight at Cinefamily. Pre-register at cinefamily.org for free admission.

Upcoming Events

Seth Swirsky, a Grammy-nominated songwriter and well-known baseball memorabilia enthusiast, created the new documentary Beatles Stories, in which he filmed celebrities from Ben Kingsley to Art Garfunkel reminiscing about their personal experiences of Beatlemania. The L.A. premiere is tonight at the Egyptian Theater, followed by a Q&A with Swirsky.

Wednesday, Oct. 3

Watching vicious aliens take over Earth is fun, but sometimes the wide-eyed endearing ones are OK, too. Although the 30th anniversary of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial may just make you feel your age, see it anyway tonight (and tonight only) at select theaters in L.A. The film has been newly remastered for your modern eyes, but you know you'll tear up with sweet nostalgia anyway.

Penny Marshall is one of Hollywood's treasured comedy filmmakers, having brought us Big and A League of Their Own. Tonight, in celebration of the release of her memoir, My Mother Was Nuts, you can hear her stories about tapdancing as a child, starring in Laverne & Shirley and working with a who's who of the industry in Live Talks L.A.: An Evening With Penny Marshall at the Aero Theatre.
