Take a drive down to Palm Springs for the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival, which begins its 25th edition today. The fest takes place all over town -- at the Camelot Theatres, Palm Canyon Theatre, Palm Springs High School Auditorium and Annenberg Theater. In addition to screenings of movies submitted to the Oscars' Best Foreign-Language Film category as well as other features and documen-taries (both international and domestic), there will be filmmaker tributes and the "Talking Pictures" series with onstage interviews. Tickets went on sale to the general public Dec. 26. Or you can buy vouchers in packages of six for $60 or 10 for $100 at psfilmfest.org.
Two classic Hollywood stars who died tragically starred in the 1955 classic Rebel Without a Cause, which starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Aero. James Dean and Natalie Wood played high school students who make the type of poor decisions many teens do. This film, released a month after Dean's tragic passing, also features a memorable moment at Griffith Observatory.
At midnight, Cinefamily screens 1986's Blue Velvet from writer-director David Lynch. Once hated by critics but now widely acclaimed, this thriller follows the events that come after college student Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) finds a human ear and recruits high school student Sandy (Laura Dern) for help in solving the mystery.
