Must See Art
Richard Aldrich at Marc Foxx Gallery
Don’t miss the opportunity to see these paintings by Brooklyn-based painter Richard Aldrich. As you spend more time in the gallery, you feel as though you are eavesdropping on a conversation and the paintings have all just noticed you’re listening. Both minimal and abstract, Aldrich’s subtle sense of humor reveals itself over time. The works are connected in a variety of ways, whether by formal repetitions in the paintings, similarities in color and technique, or overt anthropomorphism — as in Crazy Eyes (2007), a white painting with a green eye on each edge of the canvas. Aldrich refers to his own paintings as “props,” bringing to light the idea that together they set a tone and create a space, an environment where everything is working together.

Curated by Malik Gaines of My Barbarian, this show features the work of 19 contemporary artists who all use different media to explore language and how we use it to identify ourselves and shape the world around us. All of the artists in this show use text or language as a focal point. Highlights include Emily Roysdon’s video Untitled/POW, paintings by Glenn Ligon, Lisa Anne Auerbach’s knitted banners and Jack Pierson’s wall sculptures. Also included are Andrea Bowers, Charles Gaines, Stephanie Taylor, Mary Kelly, My Barbarian, Shannon Ebner, Dustin Ericksen, Alexandra Grant, Vishal Jugdeo, Ken Lum, Lucas Michael, Glynnis Reed, Guan Rong, Lara Schnitger and Mark Titchner.
