Must See Art
Videos by Harry Dodge and Stanya Kahn at the Hammer Museum
Don’t miss these two screenings that are part of the current “Eden’s Edge: Fifteen L.A. Artists” exhibition at the Hammer Museum. One shows work by the video team of Harry Dodge and Stanya Kahn, the other is a program curated by the pair. On July 24, Dodge and Kahn will show their Winner, Whacker, Let the Good Times Roll, Masters of None as well as a brand-spanking-new work. The following Tuesday, July 31, they offer Wynne Greenwood and K8 Hardy’s The New Report: Chelsea, in which the two newscasters question the role of female identity in the art world in a mock local news report; Abbey Williams’ CALIFORNIA/blue, in which she sings Joni Mitchell in IKEA, and Paul Chan’s Untitled Interview With Lynn Stewart, a portrait of the first lawyer in the U.S. to be convicted of aiding terrorists. Also included are Nao Bustamante’s Rosa Does Joan, Michael Smith’s Secret Horror and Kalup Linzy’s Play Wit de Churen. Both events begin at 7 p.m. in the Billy Wilder Theater and are free.

“Radiant City” at Cherry and Martin
In this summer show, the work of nine artists focuses on their relationship to artwork made in the past century. Here it is not only what has been influential that is implemented by these young artists, but they also exploit or misinterpret familiar techniques in exciting ways. Rebecca Morris’ triangular painting, literally buzzing with formal contradictions, is completely riveting. The subjects of Michael Bauer’s oil paintings seem to simultaneously implode and explode, making multiple images with no fixed center. Also included are Walead Beshty, Luke Dowd, Anton Henning, Mai-Thu Perret, Anthony Pearson, Sara Vanderbeek and Tyler Vlahovich.
