Must See Art
Elaine Reichek, Glossed in Translation, at Shoshana Wayne Gallery
Elaine Reichek employs a new method created by a computer-programmed sewing machine to create miniature embroideries of famous works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Sue Williams, Ellsworth Kelly and Henri Matisse. With the artworks shown in this new context, emphasis is placed on the patterning and color, much as in fabric. The main work in the show is a large, translucent curtain, also machine-embroidered, but done by hand, featuring works by artists from Poussin to Lawrence Weiner. These mediations recontextualize significant art-historical references and make them into a witty and complex sampler for todays contemporary artist.

A comfortable living-room environment and hip-hop combine in Kendell Carters installation in the Hammers project room. Carter plays with many signifiers, juxtaposing histories and cultures. There are hanging lamps made out of Kangol hats, graffiti-style Plexiglas tags reading fresh, chrome milk crates with toile pillows made into seats, a day bed with Chanel and camouflage-fabric quilt squares, pillows made of shoelaces, a wall drawing of the Rock Steady Crew, potted orchids, an acrylic cornice, and wainscoting that looks like the panels in a North Face jacket. This recent graduate from the MFA program at Cal State Long Beach is one to watch.
