He Reigns in Spain
Internationally recognized as one of Europes most dynamic choreographers, Nacho Duato has not yet achieved in America the high profile and name recognition he deserves. An alumnus of the famed Nederlands Dans Theater, Duato honed his skills with the legendary Jirí Kylián. Since 1990, Duato has led Compañía Nacional de Danza in his native Spain, creating dances that move seamlessly between the worlds of ballet and modern while commenting on the human condition with insight and wry humor. In 1999, Duato created this studio ensemble to present his choreography and provide a segue for younger dancers into the senior company. The program includes Remansos, which received its premiere in the televised 1997 American Ballet Theater gala with Vladimir Malakov in the central role, and two newer works: Gnawa, inspired by Spains Mediterranean landscape; and Rassemblement, which considers Haiti, human rights and the music of Toto Bissainthe. Music Center, Ahmanson Theatre, 135 N. Grand Ave., dwntwn.; Fri.-Sat., May 18-19, 7:30 p.m.; Sun., May 20, 2 p.m.; $35-$85. (213) 365-3500.
