From Trainspotting to Mean Girls: Your Weekly Movie To-Do List

Trainspotting
Trainspotting

Our weekly list of special event movies to check out this week:

Thursday, Sept. 13

Comedian Mike Birbiglia has what appears to be a permanent befuddled expression that is both self-deprecating and endearing. Same can be said about his feature debut, Sleepwalk With Me. Although the semi-autobiographical flick based on his life as a comedian, sleepwalker, and hesitant fiancé has not been a hit with everyone, it still deserves a chance to woo you. Don't miss the last screening tonight at the Nuart Theatre.

Friday, Sept. 14

If you missed Shakespeare in the Park this summer, do the next best thing and see the '90s take on the Bard, 10 Things I Hate About You, at the Downtown Independent. It stars a fresh-faced Heath Ledger, a barely pubescent Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Julia Stiles as a teenage shrew. Everyone's secret favorite movie, Mean Girls, screens afterwards. Did we mention that this is also a drink-along? Purchase advance tickets online and your first drink's on the house.

Saturday, Sept. 15

Perhaps the hormonally driven crises of your high school days are not what you'd like to relive on screen, or a reminder of LiLo's better days is just too agonizing to watch. It's Exposition Park to the rescue with a College Days Double Feature presenting Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds. Food trucks and live music will have your summer night well spent.

Wednesday, Sept. 19

With the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire and an unforgettably eclectic Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony under his directorial belt, it's easy to forget that Danny Boyle also gave us the great 1996 film Trainspotting. The dark comedy about drug addicts in 1980s Edinburgh plays tonight at the New Beverly Cinema.
