Ever since Stephen Sondheim swirled Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and other familiar storybook characters together and sent them Into the Woods, deconstructed fairy tales have become ubiquitous. With the musical Wicked remaining a hot ticket and the movie Enchanted emerging as a big holiday hit, Debbie Allen’s reconsideration of Alice in Wonderland should find itself in fine company. Cinderella and Red Riding Hood pop up to escort a modern-day boy on a musical journey. Originally produced at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., with a mix of young dancing and singing talent and seasoned adult pros, Alex in Wonderland promises more of Allen’s signature mix of explosive, energized dancing and savvy theater in its West Coast premiere. UCLA Freud Theater, Wstwd.; Wed.-Sat., Dec. 12-15, 7 p.m.; Thurs., Dec. 20, 7 p.m.; Sat.-Sun., Dec. 15-16, 2 p.m.; Thurs.-Fri., Dec. 20-21, 2 p.m.; $15-$38.50. (310) 825-2101 or www.debbieallendanceacademy.com. Tickets to the Dec. 13 gala performance are $250 to $500 at (310) 441-5500.
