White Hinterland's Casey Dienel has a soaring, soulful voice tailor-made for today's overwrought pop, but she's not interested in being the next Beyoncé, or even the next Ellie Goulding. On her latest album, Baby, she digs deep into tricky territory somewhere between the piano confessionals of Fiona Apple and the ethereal orchestrations of that second Bon Iver album. Recorded over many months in a basement studio in her childhood home, it's haunted by the ghosts of past regrets and buoyed by the thrill of new discoveries, especially on the echo-chamber soul of "Metronome" and her own bit of brilliantly overwrought pop, "Ring the Bell." But for all her new production tricks, Dienel is at her most dazzling when, as on the defiant title track, she lets her voice ring out unaccompanied.
