When Lorne Michaels sat down to pick Jimmy Fallon's successor a few years ago, comedian Jeff Garlin was almost certainly not on the short list. Or the long list. Or any list. He's too old (51!), he's too round, and he's too loud for whatever Late Night
is trying to accomplish - which is too bad, because he's funny as hell and a great talk-show host. The journeyman comedian found his highest-profile gig as Larry David's manager on Curb Your Enthusiasm
, and now appears as the boisterous head of the household on The Goldbergs
. And for a little more than a year, Garlin has been hosting podcast talk show By the Way
. His guest for this episode will be comedian Stephen Merchant, co-creator of The Office
, frequent victim of verbal abuse from Ricky Gervais (who has likened the 6-foot-7-inch Brit to "an upright lizard being given electroshock treatment", and protagonist of the underappreciated HBO show Hello Ladies
, which was, alas, recently canceled. Garlin's infectious eagerness should be a nice foil for Merchant's lanky self-deprecation. What could possibly go wrong? Largo at the Coronet, 366 N.
