Since when does public safety require demolishing acres of natural verdancy, decimating the animal population that called it home? That's what a growing group of elected officials, journalists, environmental activists and fans of natural beauty want to know -- and so do artists Dawn Kasper, Dino Dinco and Oscar Santos. They, along with more than 30 of their colleagues, are staging the final installment of their three-part performance encampment in the 40-acre swath of the Sepulveda Basin that was unceremoniously ravaged by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last December. The encampments expose not only the Corps' crime against the environment but also the dubious reason the federal agency gave for committing it: They heard gays went there for sex sometimes. This compound injustice is at the heart of Confusion Is Sex #3, as the artists first gather for a BYO picnic lunch with the audience before dispersing into the decimated woodlands to stage micro-performances, readings and dance works throughout the afternoon. Participants include Rafa Esparza, Asher Hartman, Olga Koumoundouros, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Nancy Popp, Tessa Wills, Meg Wolfe, Dorian Wood and Warriors: Dressed in Queer, Cloaked in Now. Detailed maps and schedules will be available on site; just meet at the Natural Amphitheater off Woodley Avenue, north of Burbank Blvd., and they'll take care of you from there. Because sex may be confusing, but no one's getting lost in the woods.
